Horse Race Track in San Diego

Bet on a Thoroughbred

The iconic racetrack known simply as Del Mar has been presenting high-class Thoroughbred racing since 1937 when it was founded by show biz star Bing Crosby and a crew of his Hollywood pals. Its primary season is a summer stand that goes from mid-July to early September, but for the past four years it also has offered a shorter fall meet that basically runs for the month of November. Besides the thrilling racing (Wednesday through Sunday in the summer; Thursday through Sunday in the fall), the seaside Horse Racetrack in San Diego on the Del Mar Fairgrounds offers fine dining at its dozen restaurants and bars, concerts featuring major musical talent, food and craft beer festivals, giveaways, breakfasts trackside as the horses go through their workouts, interactions with famous jockeys and trainers and a nationally celebrated Opening Day Hats Contest that is a showcase of style. First post throughout the summer is at 2 p.m., except for “Four O’Clock Fridays” when a rock band follows the last race to get the weekend started right. First post in the fall is 12:30 p.m. The track “where the turf meets the surf” is one of the sport’s most prestigious venues and a guaranteed fun afternoon at a most reasonable price.
